The BlueCurrent Charter is the standard against which our choices are measured. It exists to preserve the purpose of BlueCurrent as people, opportunities, and circumstances change.
We serve the current.
We will ask of every meaningful decision: Does it serve the current? Does it deepen understanding, strengthen stewardship, respect living systems, and leave something worthwhile for those who follow?
We lead with curiosity.
We will approach the ocean—and one another—with humility. We will make room for science, experience, reflection, and the possibility that we still have more to learn.
We place care before convenience.
We will not treat living creatures, natural systems, or people as disposable. Where responsibility and expedience diverge, we will choose responsibility.
We protect truth.
We will distinguish evidence from assumption, communicate science honestly, correct errors openly, and resist fear-based storytelling that turns misunderstood wildlife into spectacle.
We build for stewardship, not possession.
No individual owns the purpose of BlueCurrent. Leadership is a watch held temporarily in service to the mission.
We keep the Empty Chair.
At consequential decisions, an empty chair represents those who cannot be present: future generations, the ocean, the animals affected by our choices, and the people who will inherit what we leave behind.
We prepare for the Changing of the Watch.
Leadership must be transferable. Knowledge, authority, and responsibility will be documented and shared so the mission can continue without depending on a single voice.
We stand before the mast.
When the heading is uncertain, we will bring the decision into the open, examine it honestly, listen for the deeper signal, and choose with intention.
